PM cues regional renaissance with $100 billion push

The National Farmers’ Federation says announcements today by Prime Minister Scott Morrison have the potential to usher in an exciting new era for regional Australia.
Speaking at the Bush Summit in Dubbo today, the PM has pledged his Government’s support to transform agriculture into a $100 billion industry by 2030.
The Prime Minister’s target is drawn from the NFF’s 2030 Roadmap, released in October 2018, which outlines industry’s plan to grow farm gate revenue to $100 billion by 2030 – up from roughly $60 billion at present.
Speaking from the Bush Summit, NFF President Fiona Simson said the backing of government was critical to meeting that target.
“There’s no denying a 70% increase in farm gate revenue would be transformational for Australia, but achieving that vision is by no means a given,” Ms Simson emphasised.
“We have consistently said that achieving this ambitious target will take significant buy-in from government, in the form of a whole-of-government plan for agriculture.
“The plan the Prime Minister has now committed to developing is precisely the sort of leadership we’ve been calling for.
Despite the challenges of drought, Ms Simson said the overarching sentiment of today’s Bush Summit was one of optimism.
“We know there is enormous potential in our regions and especially in our farm sector.
“Despite short term challenges like drought, people in the bush know that a bright future is possible.
“Done well, the PM’s plan for Australian agriculture will play a critical role in illuminating that path,” Ms Simson concluded.
