NFF welcomes APVMA move to publish all farm chemical recalls

The National Farmers’ Federation (NFF) has welcomed the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority’s (APVMA) decision to publish details of all product recalls – voluntary or mandatory – on its website.
“This is a welcome initiative from the APVMA, and one which enhances transparency across the farm chemical supply chain,” NFF Chief Executive Tony Mahar said.
Mr Mahar said the NFF had been concerned about reports of confusion surrounding recent recalls, including claims of inadequate communication with farmers.
“Hopefully, after today, the APVMA website will now serve as a single, authoritative reference point for farmers on matters pertaining to chemical recalls.”
Mr Mahar said the NFF was seeking more information on the circumstances of the incidents reported by The Weekly Times.
“The most critical factor is that any contaminated products are recalled and that producers are compensated for their losses,” Mr Mahar said.
“Australia is fortunate to have world-leading regulatory systems.
“It is imperative that farmers have confidence in these systems to effectively support their industry.
“Where the system has been found lacking, immediate steps must be implemented to rectify the problem.
“In this instance, the APVMA must be commended for taking action with this simple, but effective, measure,” Mr Mahar said.
