Farmers pay tribute to agricultural advocate

2 April 2007

THE National Farmers' Federation (NFF) is deeply saddened by the death of South Australian Senator Jeannie Ferris overnight.

The NFF would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Senator Ferris' family on behalf of both present and former staff and elected representatives.

Ms Ferris was a fierce advocate for rural and regional Australia, as Senator for South Australia and as Chair of the Government's Committee on Agricultural Policy.

Armed with a tenacious spirit and a sense of humour, Ms Ferris fought to make agricultural issues resonate within the Government across all portfolios.

As a former member of staff at the NFF, Ms Ferris held the position of Director - Public Relations from 1985 to 1987.

It is a great loss that is felt not only by the NFF but by the Australian agricultural sector.
